Anti-violence Group Receives Grant

An Anti-Violence group has received grants from Prince George’s county for a youth summer camp.

The Lanham-based nonprofit organization Derek Anthony Moore Charity Inc. received $9,500 in grant money from five Prince George’s County Council members and the Prince George’s County executive that will allow DAMCI to send children to camp this summer.

The Rev. E. Jean Brockington of Mitchellville founded DAMCI in September 1996, the month her son, Derek Anthony Moore, 27, was shot to death in Southwest Washington, D.C. The nonprofit was founded in Derek’s memory as a way to give back to area youth while raising awareness about senseless violence. The murder remains unsolved.

Brockington said she is appreciative of the grant, which will be used to send children to camp through the organization’s summer program, Kids to Kamp.

“When I think about these contributions, it indicates to me the council persons recognize the importance of supporting youth programs in the county,” Brockington said. “I’m very thankful that we can help the children and make a difference in their lives, to allow the opportunity for the children to have different experiences during the summer versus staying at home.”
