Parents Worried by School Cuts

New Channel 8 reports on parents fear over the cuts in the school budget.

Prince George’s County officials have announced major budget cuts for the 2010-2011 school year. Parents knew the cuts were coming but they aren’t happy about it because they fear their children might suffer.

Parents say they are already dealing with making ends meet at home thanks to the economy. Now, that pinch could be felt in class.

Prince George’s County officials need to cut $45 million dollars to make up for funding losses. Among those cuts are teacher positions. Throughout the system, 800 teacher positions could be cut along with 355 teacher aid positions.

The cuts could also mean more kids in each classroom. The average class size would increase from 27 students to at least 29 students. Parents say that discipline and individual attention are concerns because of this change.
