Participant Guide: Critical Challenges

The Envision Participant Guide provides an in-depth exploration of the opportunities and challenges which may shape the future of Prince George’s County.

In today’s excerpt, we take a look at critical challenges:

What are some of the critical challenges that we must address in the years to come? Top answers included:

  • Public School Performance—Public school system perception and reputation discourage current residents as well as some potential employers and new residents.
  • Safety and Crime—Public safety and crime perceptions and realities impact quality of life for existing residents and discourage new residents and business development.
  • Access to Affordable Health Care—Access to high quality health care is not affordable for many and is a burden on individuals, businesses, and government.
  • High Tax Burden—High tax burden on residents from local/county governments due in part to small amounts of business/commercial development. The county receives limited revenues from residential and commercial property tax base in comparison to other local counties.
  • Better Workforce Training—Workforce training is needed to support residents’ access to and preparation for jobs in high-tech and other growth industries.
