Participant Guide: East-West Divide

The Envision Participant Guide provides an in-depth exploration of the opportunities and challenges which may shape the future of Prince George’s County.

In today’s excerpt, we take a look at the major forces and changes taking place globally, in the region, and in Prince George’s County, that might impact our future. A report from the Brookings Institution outlines some of the opportunities and challenges these changes offer.

East–West divide in the region

The region has long been defined by an east–west divide, with greater job growth and development occurring in the western half of the region. A recent Washington Post article points out that many believe this divide is reaching a tipping point, where the lack of available land and congestion in the west is going to force people and businesses to look to the east, toward Prince George’s County, if it is to grow in a smart and affordable manner.
