In response to the recent financial crisis and the threat of terrorism before that, the federal government has grown and is expected to grow further. This growth might lead to even more and larger federal agencies and associated businesses looking to locate in the region.

Volatile energy supply, cost, and the drive for efficiency
Energy supply and demand are likely to represent the biggest challenge of the twenty-first century. Fluctuations in the supply and cost of traditional energy sources, such as oil, can send shockwaves through the economy. Public and private sector efforts to develop new energy sources and decrease demand through greater efficiency will shape future economic development. This region and the county can expect to be affected by this because of the presence of the federal government and research institutions, including the University of Maryland.
