Participant Guide: Media Partners

The Envision Participant Guide provides an in-depth exploration of the opportunities and challenges which may shape the future of Prince George’s County.

In today’s excerpt, we take a look at our media partners:

Media Partners

To reach and engage the diverse community that is Prince George’s County, Envision Prince George’s staff developed and executed a communications and outreach strategy that included grassroots outreach efforts through community events; organizations and institutions, such as schools and church groups; and through individuals, including the cadre of Envision Prince George’s ambassadors and the Advisory Team. The strategy also involved developing stories for media, distributing press releases, and developing partnerships with local media outlets.

In the fall of 2009, Envision Prince George’s partnered with The Gazette and The Star newspapers to promote and highlight the community forums as opportunities for all members of the community to share their ideas on the future. Part of the Community Newspaper Group of Post-Newsweek Media, Inc., a division of The Washington Post Company, The Gazette has been publishing weekly newspapers in the Maryland suburbs since 1959. The Gazette publishes weekly community newspapers in several communities throughout Prince George’s County.

In early 2010, Envision Prince George’s launched a partnership with Radio One, one of the nation’s largest radio broadcasting companies (and headquartered in Prince George’s County), to execute a promotions strategy including community contests, online engagement, and town meeting participation. Several on-air personalities participate as “ambassadors” for the initiative as well. Radio One has three radio stations (WKYS-93.9; MAGIC-102.3; and PRAISE-104.1) in the county’s market targeting a wide-range of ages and listener types. The company is the largest radio broadcasting company that primarily targets African-American and urban listeners.

Envision Prince George’s has also been pleased to partner with Prince George’s Community Television (CTV). CTV is an award winning, non-profit cable access entity that serves as the media hub of information for the county to promote the use of local television media by residents, schools, civic groups, faith based organizations, as well as the Prince George’s County Government. CTV featured Envision Public Service Announcements, promoted contests and the Town Meeting on its Community Bulletin Board, and also through communications channels such as its newsletter. CTV also covered the Town Meeting on its newscast and through original programming.

Additional outreach is also underway to attract other media outlets including Spanish radio, Washington Post, and local television networks.
