The Gazette: Residents Look Into Future At Forum

The Gazette reports on last Saturday’s Envision Prince George’s 21st Century Town Meeting.

Brenda Pruitt of Fort Washington thinks the nearby Henson Creek Trail would be a perfect place to walk or ride a bike, if only it weren’t so secluded.

“You don’t have enough security inside a wooded park area,” Pruitt said, adding that she walks the trail but avoids its more heavily wooded areas. “I’m not going in there, but I do want to be able to exercise.”

Pruitt was one of more than 1,000 participants who showed up Saturday to voice their concerns and support at the Envision Prince George’s 21st Century Town Meeting in Landover. The event, sponsored by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, was designed to provide residents a say in the county’s future planning goals.

“Our mission is really to engage citizens in important decisions that impact their lives,” said Steve Brigham, chief operating officer for AmericaSpeaks, a Washington, D.C., nonprofit that has helped coordinate the 18-month Envision Prince George’s initiative. “We’ve seen citizens gather in large numbers to find shared priorities.”
