County Works To Use Hud Funding

Prince George’s County housing officials had to give back $2 million to the U.S. Department Housing and Urban Development in January. But now they are working towards that never happening again.

Prince George’s County housing officials say they will not lose any more federal money through inaction despite a recent warning that the federal government is concerned with the department.

One of the Department of Housing and Community Development’s greatest blunders came in January, when the county was forced to give back $2 million to U.S. Department Housing and Urban Development because it failed to spend the funds for five years. Council members told the officials they don’t want it to happen again.

“We’re making sure we’re meeting the timelines as far as the expenditure of funds,” said James E. Johnson, director of the county’s housing department.

Johnson’s remarks came after the County Council called the top members of the troubled department to a special hearing March 30 about the department’s speed and management after recent shake-ups.
