A Smooth School Year

[WASHINGTON POST]  FOR HITE AND PRINCE GEORGE’S SCHOOLS, A SMOOTH YEAR, FOR A CHANGE

Being the school superintendent of a large school system is not an easy job, but William R. Hite takes it all in stride.  His calm and steady demeanor has proved to be advantageous in such a powerful position.  Although the current economic meltdown and budget crunch have restrained school spending he has been able to have a successful first year on the job.

Hite took the job after past superintendent John E. Deasy resigned abruptly in 2008.  It was a turbulent time for the school system of 127,000 students.  Since 1999 there had been four different leaders and many citizens felt that another sudden change would further shake up existing issues.

Although there were no excessive funds for ambitious new programs, his first full year has ended in “relative tranquility.”  According to school board member Judy Mickens’Murray “he came onboard at a time when things were under a real upheaval.  He seemed to put his ego aside” in not radically revising his predecessor’s initiatives, she said.
