Focus On Resources To Spur Development, Say Prince George’s Leaders

[GAZETTE]  ENVISION PROGRAM TO BECOME NONPROFIT, CONTINUE WORK ON VISION FOR COUNTY

At its Economic Forum held in June, Envision Prince George’s announced to the audience of about 300 people that it had plans for becoming a community-managed nonprofit.  The nonprofit would concentrate on commercializing the county’s resources and creating a vibrant economy and high quality of life.  This nonprofit would bring residents, community and business leaders and public officials together to share ideas and resources.

Envision Prince George’s started as a partnership initiative between the county planning department of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, county economic development and county government.  The objective for the initiative, however, was always for it to be given back to the people in order to be a genuine community effort, as expressed by Desiree Griffin Moore, executive director of the Prince George’s Community Foundation.

Goals for the initiative include developing the defense and homeland security corridor along the southern Green line of the Metro, boosting research growth at University of Maryland and in northern Prince George’s,  creating a downtown in New Carrollton and making the county more small-business friendly, just to name a few.

Moore commented that “It’s fascinating to see so many people targeting the same goals.”
