Transit Oriented Development

[WASHINGTON BUSINESS JOURNAL]  MARYLAND TO BOOST DEVELOPMENT AT TRANSIT STOPS

Major urban development may soon become a realization around several of Prince George’s metro stations.  Governor Martin O’Malley recently announced that seven transit stops in Prince George’s and Montgomery counties will receive development assistance for transit-oriented projects.

Branch Avenue Metro, Naylor Road Metro, Laurel MARC and New Carrollton Metro, MARC and Amtrak stations have been deemed eligible for public assistance from the Maryland Department of Transportation and other state agencies in the form of development incentives, pedestrian access improvements and infrastructure updates.

Under the program, the projects must be within a half-mile of the transit centers and be mixed-use consisting of retail, residences and offices.  The idea of transit-oriented development is that it will reduce sprawl, increase transit ridership and promote office development near the transit centers.
