Farmers: Buy Local, Buy Often

[GAZETTE]  ‘CHALLENGE WEEK’ HELD TO BOOST INTEREST IN EATING COUNTY GROWN PRODUCE

Do you enjoy fresh, plump fruits and vegetables?  The best way to get the most delicious produce and to support your fellow Prince Georgians in the process, is to buy local from area farmers.  Become a part of this sustainable practice by participating in the statewide Buy Local Challenge Week which kicks off Saturday July 17.  During the challenge, farmers and supporters of the county’s agricultural community encourage citizens to eat at least one local product daily for the week through July 25.

“You should be getting a nice product, fresh, that didn’t travel a lot of miles to get here,” said Phil Miller, one of the owners of Miller Farms in Clinton. “Support the local guy around the corner, your neighbor.”

The challenge began in 2006 when the Southern Maryland Agricultural Development Commission tried to support area farmers as they transitioned from the once-dominant tobacco crop.  As the number of farmers shrinks both locally and nationally it is essential to support the agricultural trade because it not only keeps them profitable, but it is also beneficial to your health.  By buying local you get to know where your food comes from, who grew it and how fresh it is.  Protect your health and Prince George’s farmers, accept the Buy Local Challenge!
