Greater Prince George’s, Maybe?

[GREATER GREATER WASHINGTON] WHAT’S AT STAKE IN THE PRINCE GEORGE’S ELECTIONS

There are often discussions highlighting the amenities and resources of Prince George’s county that make it great. There are also many discussions of the ills and problems that continue to exist within the county. As we embark upon the county’s primary elections, these topics gain more importance and urgency for answers. If the right choices are made, elected officials “could dramatically change Prince George’s county’s current trajectory of lagging behind the region on job growth, metro station development, and quality schools. Or, with poor choices, it will get more of the same, just with new faces,” said Bradley Head in his Greater Greater Washington blog article.

Head stated that when he decided to buy a house near the Addison Road-Seat Pleasant Metro Station he saw the great potential for the neighborhood within the inner beltway with its two nearby metro stations, shopping choices and undeveloped land. His dream of “high-quality, mixed-use, pedestrian-friendly and transit-oriented building” still has not come to fruition. While neighboring counties’ and the district’s metro stations have blossomed with urban communities, Prince George’s 15 metro stations have yet to see such development and continue to have urban design and social problems.

Many inner-Beltway communities are struggling and will remain left behind if more attention and development isn’t focused on bettering them rather than the dispersed, sprawling communities outside the Beltway in “Developing” and “Rural” tiers. Considering the inner-Beltway is much larger than the District of Columbia (which is only 68 square miles), smart growth techniques and development, along with new and improved infrastructure and public services will surely bring in more jobs, people, amenities and investment that will help “Prince George’s County […] become the jewel and the envy of the Washington Metropolitan Area, with exciting Metro station-centered urban areas, revitalized main streets and commercial corridors, beautiful parks and thriving farms—all while creating jobs and fostering economic prosperity.”

When September primary elections come around, be sure that you choose candidates that will direct Prince George’s county in the right direction towards mixed-use transit-oriented development, pedestrian and cycle friendly streets, preserved natural land, efficient public works and transportation, and improved housing choices.  There are many opportunities for the county to be great and it is up to the citizens to make sure that our leadership understands that and is dedicated to creating a Greater Prince George’s.
