High-end Stores In Prince George’s Future

[WASHINGTON EXAMINER]  PG RESIDENTS HOPE FOR HIGH-END STORES AT KONTERRA

The residents of Prince George’s county have been complaining for years about the lack of high-end shopping options in the county in comparison to neighboring counties and Northern Virginia.  Konterra Town Center East, a multi-billion dollar project, is scheduled to break ground in 2012 in northern Prince Georges and could finally fill the county’s upscale shopping vacancy, possibly including a luxury department store.

“I’ve been here for 25 years, and we’ve been hoping for (a high-end department store) for longer than that. … We’re more than deserving of one. So, we’ll see,” said Sharrarne Morton, who lives in Mitchellville and travels to Virginia to shop at Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom.

Konterra is a 2,200 acre mixed-use development in Laurel that will be anchored by Konterra Town Center East and is slated to be larger than Tysons Corner in size.  The town center is expected to have 4,500 residential units, 5.3 million square feet of commercial, retail and office space and 500,000 square feet of hospitality space. The larger Konterra development will include more commercial space and residential units, as well as a business campus of about 550,000 square feet of office and flex space.

Although the project has been stalled several times in recent years, developers and county elected officials are highly optimistic.  County Council Chairman Thomas E. Dernoga (D-Laurel) believes “it should bring high-paying jobs, technology and higher-end retail than we often see.”
