Howard University And Biotech Campus Coming To Beltsville

[WASHINGTON POST]  HOWARD UNIVERSITY WANTS BIOTECH CAMPUS IN BELTSVILLE

The research sector in Prince George’s county is about to become much more competitive with other nationally known research centers such as Duke’s Raleigh-Durham Research Triangle Park in North Carolina and Johns Hopkins University’s biomedical corridor in Montgomery County.  Howard University recently asked the County Council to rezone 108 acres of land to an industrial employment park zone in the county’s rural tier.  The school plans to build a research and development campus in Beltsville that it believes “aligns with our teaching and research mission.  More importantly, it is good for Prince George’s County,” said Artis Hampshire-Cowan, senior vice president and secretary at Howard University.

The site currently has an existing building on it that houses the university’s Center for Atmospheric Sciences and the Center for Climate System Observation.  These programs train students in science related fields for advanced degrees as part of NASA’s efforts to increase minority representation in the profession.

Howard has owned the land since 1971, but believes now is the time to take a risk toward a project that could mean many new jobs for area residents and research opportunities for those connected to the school.  Although there is no completion date, the university feels optimistic about the site’s ability to attract and retain biotechnology companies, thanks to a feasibility study done by county planners.  The county currently is underrepresented in the biotech sector when compared to other Maryland counties but this opportunity could not only bring in many high-end, professional jobs, but also spark development and bring national attention to the county.  “It will be a very positive impact on the county to have a new biotech campus associated with a major institution,” said County Council Chairman Thomas E. Dernoga (D-Laurel).
