Prince George’s Crime Rate Down 6 Percent So Far This Year

[GAZETTE]  CONTINUED RELIANCE ON COMMUNITY RELATIONS, TECHNOLOGY HAS HELPED, POLICE SAY

Prince George’s County recently got a positive boost to its reputation.  There was an overall decrease in crime by 6% the first half of this year in comparison to this same time in 2009, based upon service calls to the county dispatch.  Violent crimes (homicides, robberies, rapes and assaults) actually decreased by 12% since last year.  This decrease in crime is largely due to established partnerships between the police and community groups.

County Police Chief Roberto Hylton expressed his gratitude to the community for being actively engaged in public safety and for working so dutifully with the police department.  The crime rate has steadily dropped over the past five years and last year the county reached its lowest crime rate in 35 years.

In addition, Hylton said that the use of integrated technology has greatly assisted the police department when it comes to crimes by making it much easier to distribute crime information to the community.  Also, they can send alerts and updates such as on the department’s news blog and social networking page.

As Prince George’s county works towards it Vision of becoming a top community in both the Washington, DC metro and the nation, it is great to hear that it is becoming much safer and more welcoming.  To learn more about the county’s crime rate, read this Gazette article.
