Trails Connect Prince George’s To The District

[WASHINGTON POST]  TRAIL WILL LINK PRINCE GEORGE’S TO THE DISTRICT

You will soon be able to walk, run or cycle to the District from Prince George’s County along a 2-mile long trail starting at Bladensburg Waterfront Park. This trail will connect 24 miles of Maryland trails with 16 miles of planned trails in the District thanks to a $1.3 million project that began 2 weeks ago. The project should be complete by the end of the year.

“This is going to allow people to essentially get into the District, and link into going to work in D.C.,” Maryland Department of Transportation spokeswoman Erin Henson said. This is very important because this missing link was considered as the highest-priority trails project in the state of Maryland by Gov. Martin O’Malley in February.

The larger project, known as the Riverwalk Trail system, will not be totally finished until 2015. However, this project will add to the already extensive network of trails in the area and will provide a great linkage between Prince George’s and the District that is both functional and recreational. It will also allow people to experience the area’s natural scenery such as along the new trail that will run through 22 acres of wetlands and wildlife along the Anacostia River.
