Umd’s East Campus Project Gets Life

[WASHINGTON BUSINESS JOURNAL]  UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND, CORDISH TO DEVELOP EAST CAMPUS

A large mixed-use development may soon come to life at the University of Maryland at College Park’s East Campus.  The university recently announced its plan to partner with Baltimore-based The Cordish Companies.  This comes after a previous partnership with Foulger Pratt/Argo Investment fell through in November due to financial issues during the recession.

The 38-acrea campus will be a $900 million-plus project that will be constructed in several smaller phases.  It is slated to include 425,000 square feet of retail space, a 200-room hotel, 100,000 square feet of office space and 1,600 apartments, including affordable graduate housing.  In addition, several university services already housed on East Campus will be relocated to the new development.

The first phase is expected to be complete by 2013 and may include a music hall by The Birchmere Theater. which is currently under negotiation.  The project could mean huge changes for the campus and surrounding community in that The Cordish Companies specializes in large-scale projects with major entertainment components such as Baltimore’s Inner Harbor and the Atlantic City Outlets, The Walk.
