Prince George’s County Is Greater Than A I D S

The Prince Georges County Health Department and the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH), Infectious Disease and Environmental Health Administration (IDEHA) have partnered with Greater Than AIDS and Walgreens to offer FREE HIV screening opportunities as part of National HIV Testing Day on June 27, 2012. The Maryland Greater Than AIDS campaign launches at 10:00 a.m. with a press conference at the Clinton Walgreens located at 9001 Woody Terrace in Clinton. Additionally, Free HIV testing activities will be held there from June 27-29, 2012 between the hours of 3:00-7:00 p.m.

According to Pamela Creekmur, Acting Health Officer for the Prince Georges County Health Department, the partnership with DHMH, Greater Than AIDS, and Walgreens will provide HIV counseling, education and testing services within a new and unique venue. Creekmur stressed that “Residents are encouraged to participate in the National HIV Testing Day activities. Get educated about HIV, Get tested for HIV, and Get treated if you have HIV.”

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) reports that more than 1.1 million people in the U.S. are living with HIV. The number of Marylanders diagnosed and living with HIV at the end of 2010 was 30,132. Maryland ranked 2nd among U.S. states and territories in the rate of AIDS diagnoses during 2010. Prince George’s County ranked 2nd among Maryland jurisdictions in the rate of HIV cases diagnosed in 2010. The CDC estimates 20 percent of people living with HIV, or an additional 7,500 Marylanders are not aware that they have HIV.
